GRAMMAR: PARTS OF SPEECH

The following defines "parts of speech".

Noun: A person, place, or thing. There are two types of nouns: proper and common. The majority of nouns are common. However proper nouns are those which begin with a capital letter, and are the specific name for a person, place, or thing. Example: In the sentence "the short woman named Ellen...", 'woman' is the common noun and 'Ellen' is the proper noun.

Pronoun: Used instead of a noun. Pronouns are used to keep from constantly repeating a noun in a sentence. Common pronouns are words such as he, she, I, we and so forth. Example: In the sentences "Ellen is short. She is also loud.", 'she' is the pronoun.

Verb: Describes action or being. Example: In the sentence "the short woman ran fast...", 'ran' is the verb because it describes action. In the sentence "the short woman is fast...", 'is' is the verb because it describes being.

Adjective: Describes a noun (a person, place, or thing). Example: In the sentence "the short woman...", 'short' is the adjective.

Addverb: Describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Example: In the sentence "the very short woman...", 'very' is the adverb.

Preposition: Displays the relationship between words in a sentence. Example: In the sentence "She arrived at six...", 'at' is the preposition.

Conjunction: Connects together words in a sentence. Example: In the sentence "the short woman and her daughter...", 'and' is the conjunction.
